SOCIAL WORK MANAGEMENT

Objective of the Social Work Management study program is to prepare qualified social work professionals with necessary knowledge, general and professional skills for the professional activities, who are able to provide social assistance to the individual, family, and (or) group of clients to achieve their optimal social functioning in the changing society, with underlying Christian morality in their activities, able to perform the practice-oriented empirical research, constantly evolving.

Over the 3 years of full-time studies or 4 years of extended studies, social work professionals are prepared, who are capable of not only organizing and delivering specific social services for different customer groups, but also to manage social service organizations. We prepare professionals with knowledge of the development of social services, management of social service agencies, programs and projects. Our aim is that our graduates were able to operate effectively occupying leading positions in the social service agencies.

Graduates of the Social Work Management study program are qualified professionals, ready to operate in the practical field of social work, which is carried out in various establishments and communities providing social services, seeking empowerment for an individual or groups. Students of the Social Work Management study program are prepared to provide social services, to manage social service agencies and to work in the areas of social security, education, health, law enforcement, etc., where there are social worker positions, in the public, non-governmental and private sectors.

Upon completion of this program students are awarded the professional bachelor’s degree in Social Work.

FINAL THESIS 

The Social Work Management study program is completed with assessment of the graduate’s competence during the defence of the final thesis. Final thesis is defended after completion of all the subjects in the study program and passing all their exams and completion of all professional practices.


DESCRIPTION OF PRACTICE

There’s the introductory, educational and final practice foreseen in the Social Work Management study program. Objective of the practices is to apply the theoretical knowledge of social work in practice and to develop practical skills based on ethical principles of social work. The final practice lasts 3.5 months, so students have an excellent opportunity to test themselves in professional activities. This practice is especially appreciated by our social partners. Students learn to use various methods of social work, to develop and implement case plans, to anticipate opportunities for development of the social services organization. At the end of practice, students prepare and present practice report.


WHERE CAN STUDENTS DO THEIR PRACTICE?

Centre of social services, social assistance departments, Crisis centres, Shelter houses, Kaunas House of Generations, Kaunas Archdiocese Family Centre, Lithuanian Caritas, Retirement home “Senjorų vila”, local authorities, etc., where there is a social worker position.

Study field subjects – Fundamentals of social work and professional ethics; Human rights in social work; Basics of Psychology; Basics of Economics and Management; Basics of Sociology; Basics of Educology; Social work theories; Organizational Psychology; Social Policy; Social work with individuals and families; Social work with groups and communities; Individual and group counselling; Social Security Law; Social rehabilitation and integration; Development of Social Programs and Projects; Research methods in social work; Information Technology; Labour Law; Entrepreneurship basics.

General subjects – 1st foreign language; 2nd foreign language; Language Culture; Christian Social Teaching; Philosophy.

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Administer social services provided to the customer in accordance with national and international laws and regulations and professional ethics;
  • To participate in the formulation and implementation of state social policy;
  • Apply theories of social work and other social sciences, methods of social work and innovations seeking people empowerment and positive change in social life of a person, group, community;
  • Develop and implement preventive projects and programs dealing with social problems;
  • Strengthen their professional expertise striving for their personal and professional growth through lifelong learning.

WHAT IS SOCIAL WORK MANAGEMENT?

Social Work Management studies are designed to prepare professionals who are concerned about well-being of the society. Before choosing these studies, the most important is to think about your vocation. Only a person who is not indifferent to the other person’s problems, who feels deep inner fullness while helping others, will be able to do social work. Here it is necessary to continuously develop humanistic qualities – empathy, sensitivity, altruism, but also to maintain critical thinking, to look for strategic solutions to the problems.

Social Work Management – these are the studies that will prepare a specialist to join the society with a clear understanding of what are the core problems of the community, how to interact with socially vulnerable groups in society, what methodology to apply in dealing with different problems of individuals, families and certain segments of the society.

Only a psychologically strong person can choose Social Work Management. According to one of the pioneers of social work, Mary E. Richmond, this job can be done by an idealist, firmly standing on his/her feet and feeling love when helping other people. Social work management specialist after graduation is going to constantly face challenges, encounter creative process in order to establish a relationship with sensitive and troubled people, it is necessary to respond promptly to the emerging difficulties, therefore cool mind and patience are essential qualities for a social worker.

Graduates can continue their studies in the second cycle of studies, according to the procedures of the higher education institution.

Upon completion, graduates will be able to work in social work institutions, social enterprises, other companies and organizations, where social worker position is foreseen, etc.
