STUDENT FEEDBACK

Tessa Hermkes from Germany

During my Erasmus+ studies at Kolpingo Kolegija in Lithuania I’ve gained many new experiences. Not only did I learn more about Lithuanian culture, but I also learned much about myself and made many new friends from all over the world. In Kaunas, my friends and I often spent our time near Kauno pilis where we had multiple picnics, played volleyball or just went for a walk. On the weekends we often went out partying or on little trips. I got to visit Nida, Klaipėda, Palanga, Trakai and even Warsaw, Poland.  The people in Lithuania were very kind and always helpful. Although sometimes there were difficulties with the language, everyone was open and friendly to me. At University, things started off differently than expected but everyone tried to support me at all times. Due to the language barrier, I ended up getting mostly private lessons which helped me to focus on my studies and gave me the chance to decide which topics, in particular, to talk about. In addition to that, I was given the opportunity to do an internship at a daycare center for children with autism and developmental disorders. These five weeks allowed me new insights into a new field of work and helped me become more confident about my future career. Looking back, I am very thankful that I had the chance to study abroad and I can only encourage everyone to take the step and go abroad too – even if it seems to be scary.

Oliver Diop and Tereza Matějková from Czech Republic

We had the opportunity to do practice at the Kolping Primary School.  Our practice was an amazing and exciting experience. Both me and Tereza enjoyed our stay in Kaunas. From a pedagogical standpoint, I must say there were a couple things different from our school system – in a good way. The daily timetable was structured differently compared to our schools, and it worked really well. I was pleasantly surprised with how well the teachers handled different situations with relative ease, while still being able to make sure everything is under control. And I´m sure that the kids appreciate the individual approach that the teachers take to them. It was also refreshing to see the creative forms of approach in different classes, such as for example Maths, where the kids used colored blocks that resembled numbers, or Art where kids had much more freedom to express the theme that they were supposed to draw. When it comes to my personal experience, it was fun working with the kids and assisting the teachers – the kids loved us and did their best to make the experience a good one. It was also great that so many of the kids speak English; thanks to that, I had no trouble communicating with them. What I know will make me better at working with kids is the fact that I had the chance to experience working with kids with special needs. I had to take a different approach while also taking their thought process into consideration – such as their reactions, emotions and needs.

Karolina Kováčová from Slovakia

I’ve been an Erasmus+ student at Kolping University of Applied Sciences for 5 months but I wish it was for longer. Teachers were extremely friendly, it felt more like a big family than a school. My Erasmus Coordinator was very helpful and I don’t think I would have survived without her.   I enjoyed lectures and volunteering at the Family Centre, where I have met amazing kids and learned a lot from social workers of the Centre. Kaunas and Kolping University of Applied Sciences will be forever in my heart and I’ll never forget all these beautiful memories.

Michaela Jonášová and Markéta Stárková from Czech Republic

It was really nice to be in Erasmus+ internship in Kaunas at Kolping University of Applied Sciences. We improved our English skills, made new friendships, and got to know the life in the new for us country. It was such a pleasure to learn and to be here! We tried to see and learn as much as we could during our stay in this friendly place.

A mere speck on the world map to an outsider, it is much more to a Lithuanian – a country that was built over thousands of years. It is a place that intertwines the experiences of our ancestors, the battles that were fought, and the love that was shared. Lithuania is mostly about its people. The people, who built the state and the cities, who engendered cultural enrichment and knowledge, and who searched for their true identity. Although Lithuania was first recorded as a country in 1009, the first people are thought to have settled in the territory as far back as the 10th millennium BC. The first Baltic tribes arrived some 7,000 years later and settled near the Baltic Sea. Lithuanians are proud to have been brought up in a country with such a rich historical past, and they try to accentuate their national heritage by doing their best on stages and in sports arenas, by being great painters and authors, by singing their hearts out to thousands of people, and by making their presence known with the tricolour flag.
