On 15 January 2020, the second year students of Ecotourism with the teacher Violeta Urbaite-Būdelienė did a practice in the city of Kaunas.
Each of the students had to present and tell about a chosen place of interest, or a historical object – in the role of a guide. The tour started from the historical pride of Kaunas city, standing near Kaunas Castle – the Freedom Warrior-Vytis. One of the students, Andrius Kiaušas, at the start of the tour briefly told about this impressive sculpture. Walking further, the students heard the story by their colleague, Aistė Metelionytė, about one of the largest and oldest Kaunas Gothic architecture churches – St. George the Martyr Church.
Kaunas Town Hall – the heart of Kaunas, famous for its old history, dating back to the 16th century, was presented by the student Mantas Salamanavičius. Walking towards the historic Presidential Palace, through the oldest part of the city – Kaunas Old Town, we heard Greta Patarakaitė’s narrative about this place. Student Lukas Kačenauskas made a presentation about one of the most important places in the Temporary Capital – the Historical Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania.
Walking towards other places of interest, we heard about the coin chest from the times of Sigismund Augustus, which was guarded by the majestic Laisvės Alėja (Liberty Avenue). Its story in detail was told by the student Deimilė Šulcaitė. Nearby, one of the oldest churches in Kaunas, St. Gertrude’s Church was visited. We learned about it from the student Mantas Pagojus. Cultural objects, such as the Central Post Office, National Kaunas Drama Theatre, Kaunas State Musical Theatre, were presented by students Edvinas Pažėra, Rytis Rinkevičius and Tauras Tarolis. Ervinas Mitkus told us about one of the largest Lithuanian universities – Vytautas Magnus University. One of the most interesting museums in Kaunas is the Vytautas the Great War Museum. This object of interest was presented by students Oskaras Maselskas and Jolita Daujotaitė. To relax and to have a meal, the students chose also a historic restaurant in the very centre of the city, the Metropolis Restaurant-Hotel, which was frequented by many famous people, and we heard from Kristina Marcinkevičiūtė about their visits. Having some free time, the students had fun participating in quizzes organized by one of the students, Jolita Daujotaitė. She presented the winners with a sweet prize.
After the visit at the restaurant, students headed towards the only museum of its kind in the world – the Devils’ Museum. There, a professional guide told about the devil’s sculptures, about the works of the famous artist Antanas Žmuidzinavičius, and his life. Ugnė Mencevičiūtė also provided us with some information about this place.
The students listened to the story of Gabrielė Talalajevaitė about the historical Žaliakalnis funicular, which they all took to visit the last object of the tour – Christ’s Resurrection Church-Basilica. Student Lukas Jankūnas told about this impressive temple.
The students heard a lot of interesting information from each other, visited unseen objects and enjoyed the fun practice that everyone did on the walking tour together.
